A Focus on TADs
A 'clinician with academic interest', Dr. Baumgaertel is a world-authority in the field of Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs) in orthodontics. His major research focus for over a decade was the improvement of TAD success rates and the development of simple and fail-safe biomechanics. These efforts lead to the development of various clinical approaches that have been widely adopted in the profession and are today considered best-practice protocols for TADs. Currently, his main focus is teaching these proven concepts to students and colleagues. Not a day passes where Dr. Baumgaertel does not obsess over how he can be an even better teacher.
Contribution to the Specialty
Dr. Baumgaertel holds teaching positions at various Orthodontic Departments and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthodontics at Case Western Reserve University. As such, he has the privilege to educate the next generation of leaders in our Specialty. Along his standing commitments at the University he is also a popular speaker at orthodontic conferences and has addressed his colleagues at all the major meetings world-wide, delivering cutting-edge knowledge to orthodontic practitioners and researchers. A prolific author of scientific articles and text books, Dr. Baumgaertel has contributed substantially to the current body of knowledge in our Specialty.
Commitment to Excellence: TAD Challenge
In the current environment our specialty can only survive if we as specialists commit ourselves to excellence and aim to compromise less. TADs are an ideal adjunct to traditional orthodontics to achieve this elevated standard of care that will act as the only effective moat against competing currents. However, Dr. Baumgaertel realized very quickly that when it comes to TADs, the traditional channels of orthodontic education are ineffective. To further TAD education he created the first hands-on training course in the US both typodont based and on live patients. The TAD Challenge is the next step in TAD education.
